Help from friends necessary in hard times, says Turkish ambassador

ZAGREB, 25 January (Hina) - Help from friends is necessary in hard times, Turkish Ambassador Mustafa Babur Hizlan, whose country has donated 200 housing containers to Croatia following the 29 December earthquake in Sisak-Moslavina County, said modestly during a visit to the quake-hit area on Monday.

This is unfortunately a very difficult time for people. Friendship in these difficult moments, when help from friends is necessary, is shown with concrete assistance, the ambassador told Hina while visiting Petrinja.

In the first days following the devastating earthquake, Turkey sent 480 tents and 272 heaters to Sisak-Moslavina County. A week later, the first housing containers arrived from Turkey, and so far 150 have arrived.

The ambassador said that his country was able to respond quickly because it had experience with earthquakes and the necessary infrastructure. Aid from Turkey has continued arriving.

A total of 150 containers have already arrived, another 30 will arrive tomorrow, and 200 will arrive in total, Babur Hizlan said, adding that he was confident that if Turkey needed help, Croats would help.

He noted that the friendship between Ankara and Zagreb was not new and that the two countries had had friendly relations since the time when Croatia gained independence and that political cooperation had always existed, starting with the late presidents Franjo Tuđman and Süleyman Demirel.

The Turkish diplomat visited Petrinja with representatives of the embassies of Azerbaijan, Iran, Morocco, Egypt, Algeria, Libya, Malaysia, Indonesia and Iraq and the head of the Islamic community in Croatia, Mufti Aziz Hasanović.

Hasanović said that everyone had the duty to contribute, regardless of their religion.

Petrinja Mayor Darinko Dumbović thanked the delegation for their visit and said that it would never be forgotten.

Before visiting Petrinja, the ambassadors and Mufti Hasanović also visited Sisak.
