24th Int'l Lace Festival opens in Lepoglava

ZAGREB, Sept 11 (Hina) - The 24th International Lace Festival was opened in Lepoglava on Friday and it is being held virtually due to the coronavirus pandemic until September 30.

The festival is taking place under the auspices of President Zoran Milanovic, the ministries of culture, tourism and agriculture, and the Croatian Commission for UNESCO. This year's partner country is Bulgaria.

Bulgarian Ambassador to Croatia Genka Vasileva Georgieva talked about the ties between Lepoglava and Kalofer, Bulgaria, two centres of lace-making.

Lepoglava found Kalofer, one of the centres of lace-making in Bulgaria, which is interesting for being the birthplace of our greatest revolutionary and poet Hristo Botev, she said, adding that lace in Kalofer and Lepoglava was made by using the same method.

Lepoglava Mayor Marijan Skvaric said videos from 14 countries and six Croatian lace-making centres would make up the virtual part of the festival.

The festival includes an exhibition of Lepoglava and Bulgarian lace at a local monastery.

Lepoglava lace was included on UNESCO's list of intangible heritage in 2009.
