Parliament endorses PM's report on European Council meetings

ZAGREB, Jan 17 (Hina) - The Croatian Parliament on Friday endorsed a report by Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic on meetings of the European Council in 2019, which included the programme for Croatia's presidency of the Council of the European Union from 1 January to 30 June 2020.

Plenkovic presented the report to the Sabor and outlined Croatia's priorities during its presidency of the Council of the EU, underlining that it was a great achievement for the country and all its citizens.

"Heading the EU, Croatia will advocate a strong Europe in a world of challenges, which is Croatia's slogan during its presidency," the prime minister said.

The priorities are based on four pillars - a Europe that develops, a Europe that connects, a Europe that protects and an influential Europe, said Plenkovic, adding that during the Croatian presidency more than 200 meetings would be held in the country and that Croatia would chair more than 1,400 meetings in Brussels.

Lawmakers unanimously voted for the law on compensating employees at Plobest d.d., which will ensure compensation for 566 employees who were exposed to asbestos in their workplace from 8 October 1991 to 21 October 2002, and spent at least 5 years at the company. Each worker or their legal successor will receive HRK 219,000.

Opposition-sponsored amendments to abolish the time limit for the recognition of the right to compensation were rejected.

Parliament also endorsed a plan for the alignment of Croatian legislation with the European Union's acquis communautaire this year and sent several bills to second reading.
