Land granted for new hospital for chronically ill children

ZAGREB, June 10 (Hina) - State Assets Minister Goran Maric and Zagreb County Prefect Stjepan Kozic on Monday signed an agreement on granting HRK 1 million state-owned land in Gornja Bistra for the construction of a special hospital for chronically ill children in that area 20 kilometres northwest of Zagreb.

The special children't hospital is currently located in the ancient Orsic castle built in 1773 and there are currently about one hundred children from around Croatia being treated in the hospital in conditions that cannot be considered to be satisfactory.

Twelve children in some rooms

The lack of space is a crucial problem and some rooms have up to twelve children in them which is unacceptable according to criteria established by health experts, the hospital's director Renato Mittermayer said.

The new hospital will mean better conditions and expanding capacities and the plan is to provide palliative care for children, Mittermayer said.

Bistra Mayor Kresimir Gulic underscored that the land the state has granted covers 65,000 square metres.

Gulic promised that the municipality would make its contribution by building utility infrastructure and access roads and it will exempt the hospital from paying utility contributions while County Prefect Kozic announced that the county would finance the preparation of building plans.
