Public TV subscription fee halved for indigent pensioners

Author: Vojo Micak
ZAGREB, Oct 16 (Hina) - The government and the public broadcaster HRT have decided to halve the television subscription fee, from the present 80 to 40 kuna, for pensioners whose monthly pension allowances do not exceed 1,500 kuna.
The measure was announced by Social Policy and Youth Minister Milanka Opacic and HRT Director-General Goran Radman at a press conference on Friday.

"We hope that this measure will at least to some extent improve the position of pensioners who receive minimum pensions and who regularly pay the television subscription fee," Opacic said, adding that this idea had been floated last year when the government and HRT agreed to write off debt of up to 35,000 kuna for the most vulnerable citizens.

Eligible pensioners need to submit the necessary documents as of October 19.

HRT business director Boris Struk said that the measure could cover between 60,000 and 100,000 pensioners, adding that this would mean about 30 million kuna less in revenue annually.
