ZAGREB, Dec 17 (Hina) - From 1991 to 1995, nearly 99,000 people, including both civilians and soldiers, lost their lives in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

These figures were presented in Banja Luka on Friday by the head of the Research and Documentation Centre (IDC) which had investigated human losses in the first half of the 1990s in the country.

According to the ethnic structure of the victims, 63,687 Bosniak, i.e. Bosnian Muslims, lost their lives in that period, which made up the 67.87 percent of the total number of the casualties, 24,216 Serbs (25.81 percent) and 5,057 Croats (5.39 percent), according to a report which Mirsad Tokaca presented to reporters

Of those victims, 30,514 were Bosniak civilians, 2,076 Croat civilians and 1,978 Serb civilians. On the other hand, 30,173 Bosniaks lost their lives serving in military units, 21,399 Serbs and 2,619 Croats.

Several thousand victims have not yet been listed into categories according to their ethnic background or whether they were civilians or soldiers.

"The survey has been carried out according to up-to-date scientific methods and we have used all the available sources in Bosnia and foreign sources. We have eliminated duplicated registration of the dead," Tokaca said adding that for some time the soaring figure of 300,000 dead Bosnians had been exploited for political purposes.

Tokaca added that the survey carried out by the IDC centre from Sarajevo for four years had been financed by the Norwegian government, while Bosnian authorities had ignored IDC efforts.

The survey would be completed in the coming months. All files with photos and data about every victim will then be available online. Judiciary in the country will also be able to use them when dealing with war crimes.

We assess that the final figure will be around 102,000 victims, Tokaca said adding that the establishment of the truth was a prerequisite for ensuring a war-free future for Bosnia-Herzegovina.
